ecobuild review

ecobuild shanghai 2006, a two-year long cooperation project between Hamburg and Shanghai, presented its achievements on November 8th, 2006, in presence of Shanghai Vice Mayor, Yang Xiong and Hamburg Senator, Dr. Freytag.

The ecobuild conference communicated the visions the sister-cities are thriving to promote: sustainable development through energy efficient, ecological building. Dr. Freytag underlined the need for cooperation in the field of energy efficient building in China: “A crucial issue worldwide at the moment is the efficient use of our energy. We are pleased, in cooperation with the Construction Commission of Shanghai, to be able to present sustainable construction projects in the frame of ecobuild”.

The results of this cooperation between both cities’ construction authorities were presented in the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum from November 8 to November 10: nine projects participated into ecobuild, committing themselves to achieve an energy saving of 75% compared to the average building consumption in Shanghai.

Milestones of the ecobuild campaign included recently the visit of German Construction Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee to the Pujiang Intelligence Valley on September 21st, 2006, who certified the project with the "Energieausweis", the German evaluation system for building energy efficiency. The Pujiang project, a highly energy efficient office building of 12000sqm located in the Minhang District, has been the first completed building of the ecobuild shanghai 2006 campaign.

The developers participating to ecobuild are all aware of the pioneering role they are playing on the Chinese real estate market, and of the potential multiplication effect of their model buildings.

Supporters of the whole campaign, ecobuild’s sustainability partners, Bayer MaterialScience and BASF utilized the ecobuild platform and network to promote their visions and concepts for ecological building. The industry cooperation was vital to the project, as the partners integrated their products in part of the projects.

The buildings, showcasing innovative techniques and technologies types in several districts of Shanghai, at various construction phases, can be visited during November and December 2006. Professionals, technicians, academics, politics, and the general public are welcome to visit the model units, experience the ecological concepts and gather information about the technologies and concepts integrated.
