New standards for evaluation of buildings
 
  Two weeks prior to the Green Building event in Beijing, a standard for the evaluation of building according to sustainability criteria have been published.
   
  The evaluation standard for green building with the code GB/T 50378-2006 was published on 7. March 2006 and will be enforced from 1. Juni 2006. It has been issued by the Ministry of Construction P.R.China together with General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine P.R.China. The evaluation has mainly been edited by he China Academy of Building Research and Shanghai Academy of Building Research.
   
  The standard concerns all new buildings, buildings extensions and renovations (includes residential and public buildings). The evaluation should be undertaken in the first year of operation following the completion of the building. However the standard is not compulsory, and is in its testing phase.
The evaluation consists of a building performance monitoring and economic evaluation, throughout the whole life cycle. The main criteria for the evaluation are: land conservation and environment protection, energy conservation and use, water conservation and use, materials conservation and resource use, indoor environmental quality and management (residential building) and life cycle performance (public building).
   
  According to the performance of the building, the developer will get a rating, on a scale of 1 to 3 (star system).
